The Human-Technology Interaction Center (HTIC) at the University of Oklahoma is an exciting collaboration among disciplines that historically have rarely communicated with each other. Nationally and internationally recognized scholars from five of the University's colleges have joined forces through the HTIC to address the problems that arise when technology and humans come together. Faculty in cognitive psychology, communications, computer science, education, architecture, graphic design, history of science, industrial engineering, library and information sciences, management information systems, social psychology, and statistics work together through the HTIC. Only by ignoring walls between disciplines will we be able to address the problems we will face in the new millennium when human-technical systems become more powerful . . . and more complicated. One need only look at the explosion of the Internet, the creation of smart appliances, and the advances in telephony to recognize that people are going through changes on a par with those experienced by people in the industrial revolution. Scholars, scientists, and engineers from the Center have been successful at receiving funding from business, industry, and the government. In fact, the HTIC has been selected by the National Science Foundation to serve as a Center to guide the research experiences of college undergraduates. As this NSF award recognizes, the HTIC is uniquely qualified to conduct multidisciplinary research on human-technology interactions. I am especially proud of the kind of graduate and undergraduate students that have worked with the HTIC. I invite you to learn more about the HTIC and encourage you to contact us so that we can join you in aligning technology and human needs. |
