Projects: HCI Project

Fundamental research into how humans interact with technology is conducted under the rubric of human-computer interaction or HCI research. HCI research encompasses a number of research questions including the usability of interfaces, the efficiency of the man-machine system, and the methods by which they should be developed. Members of the HTIC are studying strategic planning in air traffic control. The goal of their project is to develop and test a computer interface and tools to improve controller planning. The explosion of data networks and access to multimedia collections has brought several issues of interface design to the forefront of HCI research. Designing interfaces for effective information retrieval from collections of multimedia items has become one of our research foci. Finding ways to present users with meaningful choices requires a deeper investigation into how interfaces can be made to respond to individual needs. XX Intelligent interfaces require new forms of interaction where interfaces initiate the dialogue. Because computer can only mimic human-like intelligence, the dialogue must be carefully structured to achieve user acceptance. If the interface makes suggestions too frequently, or is unable to accurately guess users' intentions, users are likely to become more frustrated by the interface than pleased.
