UNIFORMED ENFORCEMENT PERSONNEL
- University Police Officers
niversity Police Officers receive training and are certified as Peace Officers under State of Oklahoma statutes, with full police powers. Many of the officers have received advanced training in specialty areas of law enforcement and related fields.
OU Police Officers are available twenty-four hours daily, year-round. The campus-wide EMERGENCY NUMBER (9-1-1) is answered by the University Police dispatcher on the same basis.
- Community Service Officers (CSOs)
"CSOs" are uniformed security personnel, who are trained to perform a specific function which does not require the presence of a commissioned Police Officer. CSO positions include both full-time and part-time student employees. CSOs are not sworn, commissioned, or armed, and do not have police powers although they may enforce University regulations as part of their assigned duties.
- Priorities for Police Assignment
There are Police Officers on duty at all times. Requests for service are assigned and response made on a priority basis, with emergencies receiving immediate full attention. All other requests for services or assistance receive attention as soon as possible based on the apparent or reported urgency of the circumstances. If your situation is urgent or an emergency, please say so when calling.
REPORTING A FIRE DIAL 911
Any fire actually in progress, as well as smoke and unexplained strange odors, should be promptly reported to the EMERGENCY NUMBER (9-1-1). State the exact location and suspected cause.
REPORTING A CRIME
The University Police provide all law enforcement services, including the investigation of criminal offenses and traffic collisions occurring on University property, and handle official reports relating to those incidents.
To report a crime in progress or which just occurred, call the EMERGENCY NUMBER (9-1-1).
If you are reporting a criminal incident after-the-fact in which no one was injured, the suspect has left the area, there does not appear to be any physical evidence, and there are no other circumstances which would necessitate the immediate presence of a Police Officer, it may be more convenient to contact the Police Division (5-2864) to set a mutually convenient time for an officer to come to your location to take a report.
While such appointments are always subject to the possibility of an emergency or higher priority call, every effort is made to take the report with minimum disruption of the functions of other involved University units.
ILLEGAL PARKING OR TRAFFIC PROBLEMS
Complaints regarding improperly or illegally parked vehicles or vehicular traffic conditions which are causing congestion or a hazard should be reported to the University Police dispatcher at 325-1911. All other inquiries and any questions pertaining to parking and traffic management or policies should be referred to the Parking and Transit Services Office (325-3311).
MALICIOUS TELEPHONE CALLS
Threatening, obscene, annoying, or harassing telephone calls may be criminal offenses, and should be reported to the University Police on the EMERGENCY NUMBER (9-1-1). The University Police have, in cooperation with the Telecommunications Office, developed a brochure which provides a comprehensive explanation or procedures and remedies for malicious calls on campus which is available upon request (325-2864 or 325-1873).
