LOCK SHOP SERVICES
hysical Plant Lock Shop provides a variety of services to the University community. These services include, but are not limited to, the following:

    Lock Shop
  1. Providing keys for desks, file cabinets, doors, exit alarms, safes, and other miscellaneous locks.

  2. Installing door closers, panic devices, magnetic locks, electronic locks, card-access locks, push-button locks, and locks for file cabinets, desks, safes, and cabinets.

  3. Providing master keying information and consultation.

  4. Providing security advice.

For service, call Work Authorization at 325-3060.

Key Policy

  1. Physical Plant Lock Shop issues keys for buildings, offices, classrooms, storerooms, and laboratories. Keys may not be duplicated outside the University.

  2. The following keys are available:

Individual Room or Building Entrance Key - most faculty and staff will require both of these keys.

Submaster Key - opens a suite of rooms in a building.

Master Key - opens most of the rooms in a building with the exception of restricted and mechanical rooms.

    Key Policy

  3. Deans, department heads, and chairpersons are responsible for distributing and controlling the keys in their areas. Good key control is an essential aspect of the total security picture. Master and submaster keys should be restricted to the fewest people possible. In addition, each department should have a policy, which allows for prompt collection of all keys from departing employees.

If keys are NOT appropriately accounted for following the departure of an employee, the department will be responsible for notifying Physical Plant and will assume costs associated with necessary lock recombination.

  4. Lost keys should be reported to Physical Plant Work Authorization (325-3060) so that locks can be changed if required.

  5. Keys are issued to contractors, telephone repairpersons, and various University personnel who need admittance to an area to perform work. Temporary keys may be checked out at the Physical Plant Lock Shop. They must be returned on the date specified or the company checking out key(s) will be responsible for the cost of re-keying all spaces accessed by the unreturned keys.

  6. Due to the need for University agencies, including but not limited to the Physical Plant and OUPD, to have immediate access to all spaces (e.g. in case of an emergency), only locks and keys authorized by the Physical Plant Lock Shop are to be used on University property. Any unauthorized locks or padlocks will be removed at the owner's expense by the Physical Plant when found.

Obtaining Keys

Building keys may be acquired by two methods:

  1. Customers may call Physical Plant Work Authorization at 325-3060 to obtain a work order. The keys may be picked up during normal Lock Shop hours, noon-2:00 p.m., Monday-Friday. If desired, keys will be delivered for a nominal charge. If the customer picks up the key(s), the person picking up the key(s) must show a photo ID in order to collect the key(s).

  2. If a department has a yearly key work order, a completely filled out key request card (available from Lock Shop) can be taken to the Lock Shop during normal business hours, noon-2:00 p.m., Monday-Friday, and the key(s) can be made while you wait. If more than ten keys are requested, the card may be mailed to the Lock Shop and you will be notified when the keys are ready to pick up. The key request card must be signed by one of the people assigned to authorize keys for your department. In addition, the person picking up the key(s) must show a photo ID to collect the key(s).
