COMMON INTEREST IN SECURITY

While the OU Police Department is responsible for providing protective services to safeguard institution facilities and assets, each individual department and employee is also directly responsible for taking reasonable care and precautions with those facilities and assets assigned to them. The OU Police Department is limited in its efforts by the availability of staff and the number of demands for services other than security. Security is everybody's business.

CRIME PREVENTION

The crime rate on campus can be significantly reduced if each person takes the time to secure personal and University property properly, to lock rooms and buildings when leaving, always to lock their vehicle and take the keys, to observe and report suspicious persons or activities, and never to leave valuables unattended or unsecured. Cooperation is necessary for the successful prevention of crime.

A Crime Prevention Specialist is available to address departmental, group, or other on-campus needs for security information, presentations, or material. Contact the University Police at 325-2864 or by email at —

ELECTRONIC SECURITY SYSTEMS

The OU Police Department’s Communications Center serves as the central alarm receiving and monitoring station for the University in Norman. All electronic security systems (fire, burglar, robbery, and other alarms) terminate at the dispatcher's position. The University Police will assign a member upon request to evaluate needs for and help plan electronic security systems. Such evaluations usually are concurrent with risk/security analyses as described above.

There is no charge to client departments for monitoring or response to alarm systems. Depending upon the circumstances, the requesting department may be responsible for the cost of original installation and the special telephone circuit(s) necessary to transmit the alarm signals.

OTHER EMERGENCY PHONE NUMBERS

A list of additional OU Norman Campus, Norman, Metro Area, and nationwide emergency phone numbers is available online at http://www.ou.edu/oupd/emerphon.htm.

A list of all Norman campus TDD line services can be found online at http://www.ou.edu/oupd/tdd.htm.

SPECIAL EVENTS SECURITY SERVICES

Police personnel provide security and related services at special events held on the Norman campus. Procedures have been established for the provision of such services at regularly scheduled events such as intercollegiate athletic games, large entertainment events, selected short courses, larger conferences, state competitions, and similar activities.

Police personnel typically provide access control; patron management; protection of dignitaries and guests; security for facilities, equipment, or cash; escorts for receipts; coordination of emergency management; and similar public safety functions at these events.

The OU Police Department requests to be informed of any special event your department may be planning so that they may inform their personnel and anticipate requirements for service or adjustments in routine operations. Should your department have special security requirements for a special event, police personnel can usually be obtained to assist with one week's prior notice to OUPD.

In the event sufficient University Police personnel are not available to meet the needs for security at a special event, the University Police will be glad to work with the host department to procure appropriate private security services through University contracts. Costs for such service may be charged to the requesting department depending on circumstances. For information, contact the University Police at 325-2864 or by email at —
