CONGRESSIONAL SESSION LXVII, FEBRUARY 5, 2002

CONGRESSIONAL BILL NO. 670103

Title: A RESOLUTION REGARDING THE REMOVAL OF THE SECOND WEEK OF UNLIMITED ADDS.

Whereas: Faculty Senate has supported a policy to remove the second week of unlimited adds from the university enrollment policy in order to allow classes that focus on group dynamics or desire to move quickly into material have their class rosters set and can begin material and form groups in a timely manner; and,

Whereas: This policy would place no limits on administrative adds, which would simply involve a pink slip giving a student permission to enter a class and then could be processed by any number of university administrators, not only Add/Drop, thus actually proving less work and shorter lines to enter a class beyond the procurement of a pink slip; and,

Whereas: Administrative adds would allow a professor or administrator to properly prepare a student for the workload necessary to add a class as late as the second week and give them the ability to ensure students most in need gain entrance to the class; and,

Whereas: This would have no impact on the unlimited drop policy of two weeks currently maintained by university enrollment policy.

LET IT THEREFORE BE RESOLVED THAT:

Section 1: The University of Oklahoma Undergraduate Student Congress considers it of utmost importance that all students be given an opportunity to enroll in the classes necessary for them to graduate on time, and, thus, we encourage the University of Oklahoma to make the Add process as convenient and available as possible for all students within the time that professors are allowing for unlimited adds.

Section 2: UOSA Student Congress supports the proposal to drop the second week of unlimited adds, provided that students are accommodated with certain policies:

(i) The ability to allow a student into a class is not limited to a faculty member in the second week, but can also be granted by Department Chairs and University Deans.

(ii) The time period for unlimited adds will be in fact a full week ending at 5 PM on the seventh day after classes start.

(iii) There will be a branch office for adds open for the full seven days of unlimited adds including weekends.

(iv) Eventually, there will be electronic adds available during extended business hours (8AM-6PM preferably) for students to take advantage conveniently.

Section 3: The standard means of administrative adds should be maintained in that any department has the power to enroll someone with a pink slip in order to ensure that this actually makes the enrollment process somewhat easier to a student allowed in a class the second week.

Section 4: Since the statistics show that more seniors add classes in the second week, meanwhile more 1000 and 3000 division classes are added at the same time, it is suggested that many are trying to satisfy general education and major requirements. Thus, we would request that a department mandate to their faculty members that, given space available according to the department set limit, in the second week a senior MUST be allowed into the class if it is necessary for he/she to graduate.

Section 5: Copies of this resolution will be sent to the following:
