Karsyn Redinger & Grayson Wise
After connecting through the #go2ou hashtag on Instagram more than a year ago, Karsyn Redinger, an Edmond, Okla., native majoring in health and exercise science with a minor in non-profit, and Grayson Wise, who is from Poteau, Okla., and an anthropology and French major, decided to be freshman year roommates at OU.
Since they share a love of thrift shopping and wanted to stay on a budget, Redinger and Wise decided to purchase a lot of the items for their room from thrift shops and antique stores. They also created several DIY decorations, including their key hook, painted canvases, and Redinger's cork board, which she said is her favorite part of the room.
"It is a place where I compiled my favorite quotes, verses, people, and places," Redinger explained. "It is inspiring to look at every day. It helps remind me who I am and why I’m here."
The two are both passionate about interior design and had a clear vision of the space they wanted to create to call home for this year. They frequently talked about their room and even created drawings where they planned the layout and decorations for their space. Wise said she would describe the room as eclectic, cozy, and artsy, while Redinger called it Bohemian and fun.
"With a little effort and a lot of pizzazz, you can really make a cozy room that you want to call home," Wise shared. "It makes the freshman college experience that much better when you love where you live."
"Our design inspiration was very influenced by our personalities. We both knew what we liked and that we were pretty unique in our interests and design types. So, definitely, the biggest muse for the room was one another and to just create a space that had a really good energy flow." - Grayson Wise
Carter Nance & Bobby Sanford
Lighting design has been in Carter Nance's blood ever since he was little. Now he's using lights to decorate his and Bobby Sanford's residence hall room at OU. You can find lights on everything - even on the walls in the form of a cream OU logo and a drum with a crimson background.
Nance, a business major from Sand Springs, Okla., began learning lighting design from his dad starting when he was about 10 years old. He also plans to enter the field after graduation and said he enjoys the creative aspect of the job.
“I get to create and just make it my own," Nance explained. "We heard about the Room of the Year contest, and then I had the idea to put lights in the room. Bobby and I just kind of talked from there and got ideas and wanted to make it really OU themed."
Nance and Sanford, a meteorolgy major from Ada, Okla., met through OU's roommate matching system after Nance noticed Sanford had a drum as his icon. They discovered music was a shared interest of theirs, and both are now members of the Pride of Oklahoma, where Nance plays snare drum and Sanford the cymbals. Sanford said their decorations include some items they received from The Pride to add to the overall OU theme of their room.
