Human Relations | Edmond, Oklahoma | Simple Modern

Emily Humphreys embodies the phrase Sooner born and Sooner bred.

While her grandparents and parents attended OU, Humphreys considered following a different path and attending another university.

However, the Edmond North High School grad eventually realized she was meant to become the next generation of her family to become a Sooner.

Right now, Humphreys is working part time as an e-commerce analyst for Simple Modern, located in Moore, Oklahoma. She will move to full time after her June wedding to Luke Hall, a fellow 2020 OU graduate who is earning a degree from the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Founded by a group of OU alumni, Simple Modern creates insulated drinkware and food storage. Humphreys’ boss, Corbin Wallace, is also an OU alumnus, and she said being around a group connected to her alma mater has been helpful as she steps into the professional world.

“In the transition period, they know where I’m coming from being fresh out of OU,” Humphreys said. “There’s just a common set of values in Simple Modern. One main value is excellence, and that’s something that I know OU really emphasizes, just the spirit of excellence, and doing things well.”

For two summers, Humphreys interned at GiANT Worldwide, which is a leadership development company that creates content to help with culture in companies. Some of Humphreys’ campus involvement included working as a tour guide; participating in President’s Leadership Class as a freshman then as an adviser as a sophomore; studying abroad in Arezzo, Italy, with PLC and also in Copenhagen, Denmark, and Paris, France; serving as a High School Leadership Conference counselor; and various roles with her sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta.

During her time at OU, Humphreys said she became friends with a lot of people who are like her but also friends who are really different from her.

“I’ve gotten to learn a lot about how the world lives, not just my world,” Humphreys explained. “I think having relationships with people like that is just invaluable because you need dissenting opinions. You need people who are going to think differently, and I think also you need relationships with people whose values align with your own. I came into OU with a pretty strong sense of who I am, but that’s only solidified at OU. The spirit of excellence at OU in everything I do is something I’ll carry with me throughout my career and my life.”
