Academic Support Services
The University offers various services to support students in their academic endeavors. These are listed in the General Catalog. Academic support services, which may be of special interest to anthropology students, include The Assessment and Learning Center, Writing Center, The Counseling and Testing Services, the Student Development Office, and the University Computing Services.
The Assessment and Learning Center offers seminars throughout each semester called The Student Success Series, which include such topics as LASSI/Study Skills, Reading Strategies, Career Decision Making, and so forth. The Center also offers inventories that allow students to assess their individual study attitudes and behaviors, such as time-management skills, test-taking strategies, and learning styles. In addition, they have several tutoring programs that students can work through at their own pace. Examples of their computer tutoring programs include the Intelligent Tutor, which is a mathematics review in algebra, Speed Reader Skills, and GRE, LSAT, or GMAT preparation. Advanced computer skills are not necessary for these programs.
The Writing Center provides free, 45 minute sessions to those who want help with any writing project. They also have an evening branch located on the first floor of Muldrow Tower, Adams Center. You must call the main office for an appointment. In addition, they provide daily demonstration of the basics of word processing. No reservations are needed for this service.
Counseling and Testing Services is located on the second floor of Goddard Health Center. They provide national testing in the ACT, SAT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT, etc. Also, the Center provides individual and group counseling as well as career assessment and counseling. There is a fee for services.
The Student Development Office offers free tutoring in the 2nd floor Study Lounge of the Union. Their office is in Room 200 of the Union at 325-6873. You can call them for the tutoring schedule and the subjects covered. If you need help with subjects not listed, you may ask for topical assistance from their office or from the tutor coordinator who is on-duty in the Lounge. She will direct you to someone who can assist you. The Student Development Office also has a Test Files Office at the Union in room 215B at 325-4444. Many instructors will have their tests from previous semesters on file to assist students; and you are welcomed to review them.
