Unit II: Content & Finding Aids for the General Social Sciences

Introduction of a new model of scholarly/academic research resources that uses the scientific communication model (disciplinary research literature) developed initially in the late 60's and early 70's by Garvey and Griffith, and was expanded by Friedes in the middle 70's to include a parallel "helping" system of bibliographic resources.

The new, derived model adds the dual nature of today's resource formats (print-based and/or digital-online), and refines and reduces the stages or levels of scholarly communication as being either essentially 1) information-based (new research findings) or 2) knowledge-based (synthesized, overview, cumulative expressions of "what is currently known").

For the general social sciences area as a whole, current best literature and bibliographic resources (encyclopedias, textbooks, research reviews, indexing services, guides to the literature, etc.) are noted.
