Ongoing Projects
Adopt-an-Area – Adopt-an-Area is a weekly project Alpha Phi Omega does on campus. APO is in charge of keeping the area around the Swim Complex clean, free of litter.
Wildcare – Wildcare is a rehabilitation center for injured wild animals. Wildcare takes care of the animals, nurses them back to health, and then releases them into the wild. Alpha Phi Omega helps by providing basic landscaping and cleaning help, and assisting with nursing the animals.
East Main Place – East Main Place is a local organization that provides short-term housing to homeless individuals and families. Besides providing housing, the organization also does a number of other services for those in need including schooling and budgeting. Alpha Phi Omega helps East Main Place by doing small projects including cleaning rooms, organizing materials, and painting.
Project Linus – This is a national project that Alpha Phi Omega occasionally participates in. Members make squares of quilts that are later sown together and donated to Project Linus who gives the quilts to sick children.
Past Projects
Jackson Service Club – Jackson Elementary has a class of elementary kids who work on service projects a couple of times a month. Alpha Phi Omega plans the projects and helps implement them with the support of the children. Projects include trash pick-up, making cards for people in nursing homes, and writing letters to servicemen and women.
Big Event – Organized by the campus, this service event happens every spring. It is a big push for community service in the local community. Volunteers from many different organizations, including Alpha Phi Omega, do a day of community service in Norman or Oklahoma City.
Relay for Life – Every spring, a good portion of the campus, especially Alpha Phi Omega, participates in an all night fundraiser for cancer research. Each person must fundraise $100 in order to participate. The night includes games, flag football tournament, food, and music.
MDA Carnival – Every spring, Alpha Phi Omega organizes a carnival for children with Muscular Dystrophy, their families, and the volunteers that work with them. There are plenty of games, music, food, candy, and gifts for the guests.
Dance Marathon – This is a fundraising/celebration event for Children’s Miracle Network. Each “dancer” is responsible for raising a set amount of money prior to the 15 hour event. The event involves dancing, a children’s carnival, and other entertainment.
Ugly Man on Campus – This project usually occurs during the spring. It’s a reverse/satirical beauty pageant. Contestants claim to be the “ugliest man on campus,” though most participate just for fun or for service. Contestants collect votes in the form of money. All money is donated to charity.
National Youth Service Day – Also known as Spring Service Day, this is a required project for all Alpha Phi Omega chapters. The point is to involve local youths in doing service, or to do service for local youths.
Shack-a-thon – This event occurs every September. It is organized by Habitat for Humanity. Alpha Phi Omega participates by building a shack out of trash in the South Oval and spending a night in it. APO collects donations from people walking by for Habitat for Humanity.
Tie-Dye Tri – Every fall, the local YMCA puts on a tri-athalon in the city of Norman. Alpha Phi Omega provides volunteers to help with the logistical aspects of the event, including making sure the participants are headed in the right direction, handing out water, and cleaning up after the event.
Homecoming – Alpha Phi Omega participates in the football homecoming competitions each fall. APO teams up with a sorority and fraternity and participates in competitions such as the dance competition, float competition, window painting competition, and chalking competition.
Trick or Treat for UNICEF – Every Halloween, Alpha Phi Omega goes trick-or-treating for UNICEF by collecting change rather than candy from the houses they stop at.
