NEWS FROM EDUCOM
*Educom Instructional Management Systems Adds New Partners. Educom's
NLII Instructional Management Systems (IMS) project is developing
standards for and a prototype of a system for managing the learning
experience in a networked environment. Initiated by four higher
education institutions -- the California State University, the
University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, the University of Michigan,
and Miami-Dade Community College -- the IMS project initially recruited
additional investment partners to ensure that the standards will reflect
a broad range of best practices and market needs: Apple Computer, Buena
Vista University, the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, IBM,
International Thomson Publishing, KPMG Peat Marwick, and Sun
Microsystems. Most recently, a number of additional partners have joined
the project: Farance Inc., @Learning, Empower Corporation, COLLEGIS, the
Learning Technology Research Institute, the U.S. Department of Defense,
NIST/US Department of Commerce, JISC (the Joint Information Systems
Committee which runs JANET, the academic part of the Internet in the
U.K.), Microsoft, and Intel. For more information, see
