NEWS FROM EDUCOM

*CAUSE/Educom consolidation. At the Educom annual meeting, the formal
vote in favor of a consolidation of the Educom and CAUSE organizations
was 311 in favor and 9 opposed. Since that time, the work of
consolidation has been moving forward steadily. A new board for the
organization has been formed, and Articles of incorporation and Bylaws
have been adopted. The search for a CEO is underway, assisted by the
search firm Heidrich and Struggles. The staffs of both organizations
are working on the details of bringing the two organizations together as
quickly as possible.

*1999 Educom Medal Awards Program. Professional disciplinary societies
interested in being Educom Medal partners should contact info@educom.edu
for more information on the program, criteria, and how to participate.

*Don't miss February's Profile and Link of the Month. This month Educom

INTERNET2 UPDATE

*Canadian and United States Institutions to Collaborate on Internet2.
The Canadian Network for the Advancement of Research, Industry, and
Education (CANARIE), a Canadian not-for-profit corporation representing
the public and private sectors, and University Corporation for Advanced
Internet Development (UCAID), a consortium of American research
universities engaged in the Internet2 project, signed a Memorandum of
Understanding outlining areas in which they will collaborate on
development of next-generation Internet technologies and applications.
CANARIE and UCAID have agreed to, among other things, provide
interconnection between and among their respective members and networks
for the purpose of development and precommercial testing and use of
advanced research and education applications; to collaborate on the
development of common standards and technical implementations; to
promote between their constituent member organizations and institutions
a collaboration related to the development of next-generation networking
and applications in research and higher education; to encourage
technology transfer from their joint endeavors to industry; to
collaborate on policy and governance issues; and to provide reciprocal
memberships. For more information, see http://www.internet2.edu.
