*Paul Evan Peters Awards Program Nominations Sought. The Association of
Research Libraries, CAUSE, and Educom invite nominations for the Paul
Evan Peters Award. The award recognizes notable and lasting achievements
in the creation and use of information resources and services that
advance scholarship and intellectual productivity through current and
future networked information technologies. A winner will be selected by
June 1, 1998. A nominations form is now available on the Web. To submit

*Virtual Education, Real Money. The Paul G. Allen Virtual Education
Foundation will soon be honoring the best and brightest in online course
development. A panel of distance learning educators will be reviewing
online courses for their creative use of technology, sound instructional
design, and integration of active learning. If you are an educator or
part of an instructional team at a school or college that has developed
and implemented an innovative distance learning course, visit

*Dewey for Windows 1.1. This CD-loading software provides library
catalogers with an electronic version of the Dewey Decimal
Classification system. The program features automatic cuttering; a work
area for number building; and displays that allows users to browse,
scan, search, or view summaries of numbers or terms. For more

*Robert Frost: Poems, Life, Legacy for Macintosh and Windows. This
interactive multimedia program about the life and work of Robert Frost

FUNDING
*International University (IU) Offering Student Loans. IU students are
now eligible to apply for PLATO, a loan program for undergraduate,
graduate, and professional school students who are enrolled full-time,
half-time, or less than half-time. Students can get preapproved for a
low-interest student loan over the phone. Completed applications are
processed within 24 hours and loans are disbursed immediately upon final

*SMARTer Kids Foundation Backs Grants. SMART Technologies, Inc. has
formed the SMARTer Kids Foundation, a nonprofit organization devoted to
helping fund technology in North American classrooms. The foundation
will provide more than $11 million in grants to public and private
schools, colleges, and universities during the 1997-1998 school year for
the purchase of SMART Boards--interactive whiteboards that allow
instructors to control projected Windows or Macintosh software and
CD-ROMs from the board's surface--and other equipment. For more

*WebNet 98: World Conference of the WWW, Internet and Intranet, November
7-12, 1998, Orlando, Florida. WebNet, an international forum for the
exchange of information on the development, applications, and research
on all topics related to the Web, invites submissions of presentations,
panels, tutorials, workshops, demonstrations/posters, business/corporate
sessions, and SIG discussions. Topics include educational applications;
commercial, business, professional, and community applications; Web
tools and facilities; societal issues, including legal, standards, and
international issues; ergonomic, interface, and cognitive issues;
electronic publishing and digital libraries; personal applications and
