Collaboration -- Inside and Out (a CAUSE / CNI / NWACC conference)

Hosted by Reed College
Portland, Oregon
June 17-19, 1998

(Early registration ends May 17, 1998)

The breathtaking pace at which technology is evolving requires
organizations to pay increasing attention to collaborative efforts.
Nowhere is this truer than in higher education. Colleges and
universities, the source of so much technological innovation, must
forge alliances with corporations, government agencies, and one another
if they are to keep pace with the changing landscape of technology.
Internal collaborations -- between computing, library, human resources,
development, and other groups -- are also vital to the success of future
technology efforts.

This two-day conference brings together representatives of colleges,
universities, and other educational organizations throughout the western
U.S. and Canada to examine collaborative technology initiatives already
underway and to discuss opportunities for new collaborations.

PRE-CONFERENCE SEMINARS

Two pre-conference seminars will be offered on Wednesday, June 17,
1:00-5:00 p.m.

Working Together
(Held on the Reed College Campus)

Institutional teams of information technologists, librarians, faculty,
instructional designers, and others will develop techniques to increase
the effectiveness of collaborative efforts and begin a planning process
for specific collaborative project(s) in this pre-conference seminar.
During an intensive, participant-oriented half day, using case studies
and a variety of participation techniques, attendees will:

<> Gain an understanding of the broad range of opportunities available
for joint action.
<> Use tools to negotiate and develop collaborative and cooperative
efforts to be undertaken upon return to home institutions.
<> Explore and practice skills and processes designed to support
collaborative efforts and encourage collaboration at all levels of the
organization.

The facilitators for the pre-conference seminar will be Malcolm Brown,
Director of Academic Computing, Dartmouth; and Susan Jurow, Executive
Director, College and University Personnel Association (CUPA), formerly
Director, Office of Management Services, Association of Research
Libraries. Institutions are required to send cross-sector teams and
they are encouraged to send more than two people.

Electronic Classrooms for the 21st Century
(Held on the Portland State University campus)

This is a half-day workshop on the design, implementation, and cost of
developing a variety of facilities-including classrooms, lecture halls,
and computer labs-with electronic resources. Participants will explore
key design issues, ways to avoid implementation problems, and cost
estimation for a number of different types of facilities. Recommended
for technology staff, library staff, physical plant staff, faculty, and
academic administrators. No prior experience with electronic facilities
design required.

This workshop will be held in a technology-enriched classroom on the
Portland State University campus, only a short distance from Reed
College. (Maximum enrollment 25)
