2) Tech Stocks: The Nasdaq saw its third-largest point loss in a single
day, even though there was no market-shaking news to cause the fall.
Heavy selling brought the tech-heavy index down 94 to 2311, with a
volume of 909 million. The Dow also suffered, sliding 158 to 9133, while
the S&P fell 28 to 1216.14.
3) Calendar: "Fiddle, we know, is diddle: and diddle, we take it, is
dee." Such are the harsh words spoken when poets go to battle, er, at
least when A.C. Swinburne lampooned Tennyson's work "The Higher
Pantheism." What kind of language do you spew while developing your
supply chain? You might be able to make rhyme and reason of it all by

TOP STORIES
___SAP Signs Outsourcing Deal With EDS___
SAP is setting its sights on small and midsize businesses. The vendor
yesterday announced an outsourcing alliance with EDS to provide
enterprise resource planning applications to companies that typically do
not have the technical expertise or financial resources to implement
such software.
The SAP software will be hosted at any of EDS's 12 data centers in North
America. The software will run on an Oracle database and a Sun hardware
platform. EDS will assume responsibility for housing, maintaining, and
upgrading the software and hardware. It also will provide a frame relay
connection that will transfer SAP-related business data between its
centers and the customer site.
The service will be priced between $425 and $660 per user per month for
a minimum of three months, depending on the number of SAP licenses
purchased. Customers also must pay an additional implementation fee,
which will vary depending on the amount of software customization
required. "We want to remove the barriers of entry to ERP software,"
says Tom Melchiore, director of outsourcing at SAP. He says the
outsourcing program will translate into a lower total cost of ownership,
as well as greater customer satisfaction and success rates with the
software. That may well be the case, given the many problems past
customers have had with ERP software in general. -- Tom Stein

__Commerce One, Sabre Group Team On Software Development__
Commerce One Inc. and The Sabre Group Inc. said yesterday that they will
work together on a software package that combines management of travel
expenses with purchases of nonproduction supplies used to keep offices
and factories running.
The agreement calls for the integration of Commerce One's Commerce Chain
Solution with Sabre Business Travel Solutions. Commerce One customers
will be able to access the Sabre software easily through Commerce One's
Web site. Administration of the two applications also will be
integrated.
The two vendors say a typical company spends 30% to 60% of its annual
budget on nonproduction or indirect supplies, and 10% to 15% on travel
and entertainment. "Our research of early adopters of Internet
procurement automation indicates that there is a significant need and
opportunity to streamline and improve control over corporate purchases
beyond traditional" indirect supplies, Tim Minahan, senior analyst of
E-commerce at Aberdeen Group, said in a statement. -- Gregory Dalton
___Suppliers Unify E-Commerce Sites Using Time0 Technology__
W.W. Grainger Inc. yesterday debuted a pilot version of a unified
E-commerce site for procurement of products and services from six
business-to-business suppliers. The site, OrderZone.com, was created in
conjunction with Perot Systems Corp. subsidiary Time0, using the
company's Digital Marketplace E-commerce technology.
W.W. Grainger and Time0 say OrderZone.com will offer business customers
a single point of entry to procurement sites from Cintas, Corporate
Express, Grainger Industrial Supply, Lab Safety Supply, Marshall
Industries, and VWR Scientific Products. "Here you have six big
companies with different accounting systems, different inventory control
systems," said Ross Perot, chairman and CEO of Perot Systems. "We're
offering a system that puts it all together [for the customer] without
having to change how the suppliers do business."
The system pools suppliers' existing business processes so that
registered customers will be able to securely access each vendor's site
via the OrderZone.com entry point. Users place orders using a single
order form and receive one invoice, payable electronically, for all
orders. The site will offer a real-time accounting system, allowing
users to view expenditures and inventory status with all suppliers
immediately. Mark Teflian, president of Time0, says users will see
improved inventory management and a considerable
reduction in accounts receivable paperwork. Time0's Digital Marketplace
will handle international tax rules, currencies, and multiple languages
in the procurement process. W.W. Grainger and Time0 are planning a full
launch in the second quarter. -- Eileen Colkin

__Compaq Cuts Server Prices___
In a move further demonstrating the commoditization of the server
market, Compaq yesterday announced supermarket-style discounts on its
ProLiant servers. The company will take as much as 23% off the price of
the ProLiant 800 dual-processor workgroup server, and 75% off the price
of its ProLiant 3000 333- or 400-MHz server when purchased as a second
processor.
Pricing on Compaq's ProLiant 800 workgroup server with a Pentium II
350-MHz processor and 64 Mbytes of 100-MHz SDRAM memory has been reduced
21% to $1,529, while other models with 400- and 450-MHz Pentium II
processors are being discounted 23%. The company says the reduced prices
should make the servers an appealing investment for growing businesses
with limited IT budgets.
The price reductions are effective immediately. -- Eileen Colkin
