>> New UCAID Advisory Council Members Announced
Based on nominations from UCAID members, this year's membership of the
Advisory Councils has been set. The Applications Strategy Council, the
Industry Strategy Council, the Network Policy and Planning Council, and
the Network Research Liaison Council have representation from academia,
industry and government. UCAID Advisory Councils provide valuable input
to the Board of Trustees on matters related to advanced networking in
higher education. Councils represent members' interests in the planning
process. A complete list of members for each of the councils is
available at: http://www.internet2.edu/ucaid/html/advisory_councils.html
>> I2-DSI Applications Workshop Report
The Internet2-Distributed Storage Infrastructure (I2-DSI) applications
workshop was held on 4-5 March in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Sponsored
by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Department
Information & Library Science and the University of Tennessee at
Knoxville's Innovative Computing Laboratory, the workshop brought
together representatives from application development groups who are
interested in and/or have experimented with providing high-performance
access for remote users. In addition to identifying common application
requirements, the workshop sought to provide a forum for exchanging and
discussing ideas, research results, and previous experiences relevant to
the goals of I2-DSI. Links to background, agenda and presentations from
the workshop are available at: http://dsi.internet2.edu/apps99.html
>> NLANR/Internet2 Joint Techs Workshop Report
Over 190 participants gathered for the second NLANR/Internet2 Joint
Techs Workshop held at New Mexico State University on 7-10 March. The
workshop was preceded by tutorials on IPv6, performance analysis tools,
as well as Abilene and the vBNS. The workshop included topics such as
security, Internet2-Distributed Storage Infrastructure, IP over light,
and multi-homed environments. Case studies and updates on gigaPoPs and
Internet2 backbone networks were also presented. For links to the
agenda, presentation descriptions and copies of the presentation slides,

>> Abilene Project Update
+ Abilene Technology Evaluation Center Proposals
DEADLINE: Proposals for the Abilene Technology Evaluation Center are due
today, 31 March 1999. If you have any questions, please contact Terry
Rogers, Abilene project director, at <twrogers@internet2.edu>
+ NCNE Provides Support for Abilene Connections
The National Center for Network Engineering (NCNE), a resource group of
the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center, will provide engineering services
for the Abilene Network. NCNE will coordinate with technical staff at
Internet2 universities nationwide to provide operational support,
documentation, training, and testing of new network technologies For
more information on NCNE, see: http://www.ncne.nlanr.net/
>> NCNI QBone Project
NCNI recently implemented Differentiated Services between UNC-Chapel
Hill and MCNC using the nano-manipulator application. The DiffServ
enabled routers from Nortel Networks have been used to tag and forward
priority bits within the NCNI research network. Next steps include
- demonstrations and sessions at the April I2 meeting in D.C.
- porting the DiffServ enabled equipment to the production IP network
within NCNI and,
- implementing a Nortel Networks policy server using COPS protocol to
provide marking and dynamic configuration changes throughout the
DiffServ enabled environment.
