Education Dept. Awards $135-Million to Support Technology in the Classroom

By SUSAN GANLEY

Vice-President Gore announced Tuesday that the U.S. Department of Education
is awarding $135-million in grants to train teachers to use technology in
the classroom. The grants will support efforts to improve teacher training
by consortia involving colleges, state agencies, school districts, and
non-profit organizations.

Three types of grants are being awarded. Capacity-building grants will
provide one year of support, averaging $135,000, to 138 consortia that are
developing the initial groundwork for a program. Implementation grants will
provide three years of support, averaging $390,000 a year, to 64 consortia
that are ready to carry out ideas in the field. Catalyst grants provide
three years of support, averaging $640,000, to 22 national, regional, or
statewide consortia that have the expertise and resources to stimulate
large-scale improvements in the development and or certification of
technology-proficient educators.
