Alan Davie
England, b. 1920
Big Solid Sender, 1964
Oil on canvas
72 x 60 in.
Gift of Max Weitzenhoffer, 1974

Alan Davie was influenced specifically by the symbolism and mythology expressed in the bold colors of the CoBrA aesthetic. CoBrA, a group that took its name from the cities in which the artists lived (Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam), was a revolt against intellectual art. Its abstracted, but still figurative, imagery was often influenced by prehistoric, tribal, or folk art.
