Maurice de Vlaminck
France, 1876-1958
River Scene, c. 1910
Oil on canvas
21 x 25 in.
The Aaron M. and Clara Weitzenhoffer Collection, 2000

Vlaminck modified his Fauvist style [for Fauvism, see Raoul Dufy's La Plage de Ste-Adresse] when he encountered the work of Cezanne at a landmark retrospective of 1907. Vlaminck greatly admired the structure of Cezanne's paintings, whose influence is felt in the present work. Vlaminck remained under the spell of Cézanne from 1907 until around 1910.

As is common in Cezanne's landscapes, Vlaminck bisected this canvas with a tree that serves to define the space between the foreground and background.
