May 2, 2007
This summer the University of Oklahoma’s Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, 555 Elm Avenue in Norman, will celebrate the state’s Centennial with an exhibition of works by Oklahoma-born artist Olinka Hrdy. Following an opening reception from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, June 8, “Oklahoma Moderne: The Art and Design of Olinka Hrdy” will remain on view at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art in Norman through Sept. 9, 2007. The exhibition has been designated an official Oklahoma Centennial exhibition.
Curated by Mark Andrew White, associate professor of art history at Oklahoma State University, “Oklahoma Moderne: The Art and Design of Olinka Hrdy”, will explore the work and development of Hrdy, whose Czech and Oklahoma roots influenced her work as an artist and designer. Although largely forgotten to the history of art and design, Hrdy led an accomplished career, exhibiting nationally and working with distinguished architects such as Bruce Goff and Frank Lloyd Wright.
White says, “Her artistic development demonstrates an intriguing fusion of modernist abstraction; Czech embroidery, a family tradition in which she was trained; and 1920s and 30s art deco, an architectural and ornamental style that was not only popular in her native Oklahoma and adopted home of California but was also practiced at one time by both Goff and Wright.”
“Oklahoma Moderne: The Art and Design of Olinka Hrdy” will examine how Hrdy marshaled these diverse influences into a distinctive style that she then applied to diverse media such as easel painting, murals, textiles, and consumer products. To this end, the exhibition will offer a survey of the artist’s work from her education at the University of Oklahoma in the late 1920s to her career as a commercial and industrial designer in California. Such a survey will not only demonstrate the intriguing diversity and breadth of Hrdy’s career but also offer a much-needed exploration of this forgotten modernist.
“Oklahoma Moderne: The Art and Design of Olinka Hrdy” is being co-organized by the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art and Price Tower Arts Center in Bartlesville. The works will be exhibited at Price Tower Arts Center from Sept. 28, 2007 to Jan. 13, 2008.
