Camp Crimson is not just a summer orientation camp. It's the beginning of a relationship between new students and the University of Oklahoma. While Camp Crimson is a great way for new students to learn the ins-and-outs of OU, our primary goal is that every camper leaves Camp Crimson feeling that they have been connected with a vital support system to help them succeed.
Does it work? Every year we send a survey to our campers to check the effectiveness of Camp Crimson. One of the most important items on the survey asks the campers to rate (on a scale of 1-5) their level of confidence in making the transition from high school to college prior to and after attending Camp Crimson. Over the past 4 years our campers have rated themselves an average of 3.09 before camp and 4.27 after camp. And the program keeps getting better. Since 2005 the percentage of campers who would recommend Camp Crimson to another incoming student has risen from 88.5% to 94.0%.
So what is it that makes camp so beneficial? Our camp activities are designed to teach students about academic expectations, the OU campus, OU's history and traditions, how to get involved and many other things that will help ease their transition to OU. That stuff is important to know, but what the campers talk about most is all the people they've met. They not only know important information that will help them succeed, but they know that they've got a support system in place that they can turn to whenever that transition gets tough.
And that's why Camp Crimson can be an asset to everybody. Maybe you're from Norman or the OKC metro and practically grew up on campus. You may know how to get from the stadium to the Union, but do you know where you can get free tutoring or where to apply for Student Life scholarships?
Maybe you know a lot of people from your high school that are coming to OU. You feel like you've already got a support system in place, but do your friends know the OU chant or what Intro to Zoology is going to be like?
Maybe you have an older brother or sister already on campus. But do you know the people you will be living with all year?
Come to Camp Crimson and find out about the hidden gems on campus, the proud history of OU, what your college classes will be like, and meet your fellow classmates and some of our very best students who will serve as mentors to you throughout your time here at OU!
