Sarah R. Hummel

HummelI graduated from the NEW Leadership program in 2006.  My experience in the
program was amazing and taught me to get out there and just do it!  In 2008, I was appointed by Mayor Kathy Taylor to the Tulsa Mayor's Commission On The Status of Women.  I am currently the Vice-Chair of this commission.  My
experience in NEW sparked my interest in working with women, which led me
to being a member of this commission.  Here's the link to the City of Tulsa's website - my bio mentions NEW!

At N.E.W., I came into contact with many female lawyers and judges and that also sparked my interest in the legal field.  I graduated from TU's College of Law in May 2010 and was sworn into the Oklahoma Bar Association in September 2010.

My congratulations to NEW for all of the wonderful work it's doing and the
wonderful female leaders they are cultivating! Bravo!

NEW Leadership really inspired me to be active. It helped me realize I could make a difference in the state, and how important it is to get involved. Ever since then, I have been active in organizations that strive to make Oklahoma a better place. I worked for a year as the administrative assistant/intern to the Oklahoma Commission on the Status of Women and still serve on their advisory council. I contributed research to the Oklahoma Women's Almanac, published in 2005, and worked as a graduate assistant in the OSU Library for the associate dean, focusing largely on the Women's Archives and oral history projects relating to women.

I now work as an oral historian for the Oklahoma Oral History Research Program at the OSU Library. One project we are proud of is the Women of the Oklahoma Legislature Oral History Project for which 46 (so far) of the 77 women (at the time) have been interviewed.  There is a curriculum for grades 4-9 based on this project to get students across the state interested and aware of the women that have served.

I am proud to be a graduate of NEW Leadership and am excited to see more women have this opportunity!
