The Undergraduate Program

In order to earn a degree in AFAM from OU, students are required to take 36 semester hours of course work. Students may earn a minor in AFAM by completing 18 semester hours of course work.


The following courses are required for AFAM majors:


A. AFAM core

AFAM 2003    Introduction to African & African-American Studies

AFAM 2113    Africa & the Diaspora

HIST    2033    African-American History to 1865 or

HIST    2043    African-American History since 1865

AFAM 3513    Research Methods

AFAM 4003    Seminar in AFAM Studies (Capstone)

B. One course from each of the three groups listed below (9 credit hours):

Twelve (12) credit hours selected from (1) courses not already used in category B: (2) courses listed below; or (3) courses approved by the Program Director.

*If HIST 2003 or 2043 is used to satisfy a Category A (Core) requirement, it may not also be used as a major elective.

NOTES:
A maximum of 9 hours of AFAM 4010 will apply toward the degree program.

A maximum of 6 hours of AFAM 4990 will apply toward the degree program.

It is highly recommended that students complete both HIST 2033 and 2043.

Free Electives

Electives to bring total applicable hours to 120 including 48 upper-division hours

 

The following are requirements for AFAM minors:

A.   AFAM core

B.   AFAM Upper Division
 
Three (3) AFAM upper-division courses or other upper-division courses approved by the Director, for a total of 9 credit hours
