Levine’s research focuses on the archaeology Mesoamerica and especially the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca. Most recently, he directed fieldwork at Monte Albán, which included geophysical prospection and digital mapping of the site's Main Plaza. This project investigates the changing role and meaning of the Main Plaza through time. A digital visualization component of the project includes 3D models and a virtual reality rendering of the Main Plaza.
 
Levine also has a long-term research project at the Late Postclassic (1100-1522 CE) capital of Tututepec, located on the southern coast of Oaxaca. Tututepec or “Yucu Dzaa” was an imperial capital in the centuries prior to the Spanish Conquest. This research investigates the nature of Tututepec’s political economy, social inequality, and the capital's role in the broader political landscape of Postclassic Mesoamerica. Levine also serves as Associate Curator of Archaeology at the Sam Noble Museum, home to the largest archaeological collection in the state of Oklahoma.
