Dear Colleagues,
The 2012 Ballot Counting Committee discovered some interesting facts about
the current Plains Anthropological Society membership that we want to share
with you. Ballots were sent to 367 PAS members listed in our database as
having paid their dues for either 2011 or 2012. These members were regular,
lifetime, joint or students. A reminder that only current members are eligible
to vote was included with the ballot, along with instructions on how to
renew membership. In addition, the most recent paid membership year was
printed on the mailing label to prompt renewals. We thought delinquent dues
might come in during the one month voting period, and some did.
Valid ballots had to be returned by the membership to the Nominations Committee
Chair in a timely manner and postmarked no later than September 25, 2012.
The Chair received 159 envelopes containing ballots and the ballot counting
committee evaluated the submissions on September 27, 2012. Sixty-seven envelopes
were nullified either because the submitting member had not paid 2012 dues
by September 26, no name was written on the envelope, or the envelope was
post-marked after the September 25 deadline. These invalid ballots were
not tallied. Ninety-two remaining envelopes, containing 96 ballots (due
to joint membership), were verified and produced the votes that were counted
for the three 2012 new PAS board members.
By September 26, the 2012 non-student membership in PAS included 181 individuals
in full, joint, or life categories. An additional 37 students brought the
total non-institutional membership to 218 just prior to our 70th annual
PAS Conference recently held in Saskatoon. The 96 valid ballots comprise
44% of this membership.
These data indicate a clear need to make membership renewal more timely
and efficient, and this was discussed at Saskatoon. The high number of ballots
nullified by nonpayment of dues demonstrates a strong interest in supporting
the operation of the Society by people confused about their membership status.
Consequently, the 2013 Board is looking at ways to divide up membership
duties between the Treasurer and Membership Committee so we can maintain
a current membership database and get timely renewal reminders mailed out.
We hope to have important contact information updated on the web site very
soon. If you have any question about your membership status, please refer
to the contact(s) listed on the web site. We also hope to have membership
mailing in January to remind everyone to be sure their 2013 membership is
current. Hopefully, everyone has paid for their 2012 membership by now,
because there are more journals to come.
Thanks for your time and attention.

Mark Miller (2012 PAS President)
