First of all N. crassa has two mating types (A and a)and since N. crassa is heterothallic, no hyphae of N. crassa contains both mating types. Here is a brief description of sexual reproduction in N. crassa, I'm leaving out a few steps. Fertilization in N. crassa takes place when the "female" structure (the protoperithecia) of one mating type accepts a donor nucleus of the other mating type. The fertilized protoperithecia become perithecia and the two nuclei of opposite mating types fuse to form the zygote. This zygote is the only diploid phase of N. crassa. The zygote goes through meiotic division and produces the haploid sexual spore which is known as the ascospore.
