Dianthus caryophyllus or Carnations are best propagated by seed. See
germinate at 65-75 degrees in 2-3 weeks. They can also be propagated
layers in July and by cutting taken in june of non flowering basal
shoots. They are perennial everywhere except the far northern U.S. The
flowers do need support to keep them from laying on the ground. Most
carnation varieties are available from Park Seed Co. Hope this answers
