Professional Interests

The recruitment, training, and support of Latin teachers—these are central to my professional avocation. Since 2008, I have assisted in the formation and placement of many new teachers in the states of Oklahoma, Texas, Georgia, and Washington DC. As part of this mission, I would like to expand the number of Latin programs in Oklahoma’s public high schools. To increase the lower-division offerings of the Classics and Letters department, I revived our course on Ancient Greek Culture—which had not been taught for a number of years—and to complement that, created a second survey course devoted to Ancient Roman Culture. Spoken Latin is additional interest of mine.

Service

The annual reports I compile as state Vice-President of the Classical Association of the Middle West and South—a position I’ve held since 2004—help monitor the status of local Latin programs. As a longtime board member of the Oklahoma Foreign Language Teachers’ Association, I provide opportunities for professional development at biannual meetings, keep abreast of education trends and legislation, and facilitate communication among Oklahoma teachers of Latin and Greek. The summer workshops I have helped organize—with such guest presenters as Sally Davis and Barbara Weiden Boyd—have attracted large numbers of participants. As a member of the American Classical League, I continue to assist with events for high school students, such as OU Classics Day and the Oklahoma Junior Classical League Convention. For several years, I also served as Faculty Fellow for the OU chapter of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.

Personal

A native Oklahoman, I attended Northwest Classen High School and the University of Oklahoma. After finishing my master’s degree in Classics at the University of Cincinnati, I returned home and taught for many years at Westmoore High School. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, as well as reading and travel.
