What is EarthMonth@OU?

EarthMonth@OU is our annual celebration of Earth Month®. Normally celebrated during the Month of April and associated with Earth Day, we celebrate EarthMonth@OU during the thirty days between World Water Day (22 March) and Earth Day (22 April). EarthMonth@OU consists of a series of campus and public events focused on local and global environmental concerns sponsored by members of the University of Oklahoma’s Environmental Portfolio and others.

From World Water Day (March 22) through Earth Day (April 22) many campus and public events have been scheduled focusing on local and global environmental concerns. Highlighted events include a Distinguished Speaker Series on human-environment interactions, with past Distinguished Speakers that included members of the US National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine, as well as historians and creative writers who focus on environmental issues. EarthMonth@OU also included the Institute for Quality Communities' 2017 Placemaking Conference; the College of International Studies symposium on food and water activism in global Asia; the Native Crossroads Film Festival and Symposium, including a special screening of I Stand: Guardians of Water, a documentary on the Standing Rock-Dakota Access Pipeline conflict; and numerous other student events sponsored by environmentally minded student clubs, including Green Week, Sooners without Borders, and OUrEarth. EarthMonth@OU will culminate each year with a Responsibility and Sustainability Fair and an electric car ride and drive event.

Our aim is to bring the OU campus, the greater Oklahoma community, and leading professionals and experts in the sciences, social sciences, and humanities together to discuss locally and globally timely and important environmental issues, particularly as they relate to global sustainability. We hope to heighten awareness as much as possible among these diverse groups, while providing essential information and highlighting OU’s crucial role in this important endeavor, EarthMonth@OU.
