M. A. Program Area of Concentration

At the time of application, each M.A. student should declare one Area of Concentration from the following:

  • American Studies
  • Composition, Rhetoric, and Literacy
  • Creative Writing
  • Early English Studies
  • Modernity and Theory
  • Native American Studies
  • Women's Writing

The American Studies, Creative Writing, Early English Studies, Modernity and Theory, Native American Studies and Women's Writing areas lead to an M.A. with an emphasis in Literary and Cultural Studies. This includes two sets of options:

(a) Thesis Option

(i) Critical Thesis
(ii) Creative Writing Thesis

(b) Non-thesis Option (Comprehensive Examination required)

A thesis is required for an M.A. with an emphasis in Composition, Rhetoric, and Literacy.

An M.A. student will have one opportunity to change his or her Area of Concentration on his or her own, after the start of the first semester and before the end of the second semester of coursework. The student is responsible for informing the Graduate Office of the change.
