Ph.D. Program Foreign Language Requirement

Ph.D. students are required to demonstrate proficiency in two foreign languages. Students may satisfy the language requirement according to any of the four procedures described here but cannot satisfy the requirement for both languages by method #3. One language requirement may be met during the student's M.A. granted from another institution.

Option 1

A student may take the Graduate School Foreign Language Test (GSFLT) of the Educational Testing Service before or after admission to the Graduate College. The minimum passing score is 475. The GSFLT is available for French, German, and Spanish and is given three times a year in early February, April, and October.

Option 2

A student may demonstrate proficiency by earning a grade of B or better in one of the following courses offered by the Departments of Modern Languages, Classics, and Anthropology:

    Anthropology 1723
    Chinese 2223
    French 1023
    German 1023
    Greek 1215
    Hebrew 1214
    Italian 2223
    Latin 1215
    Japanese 2223
    Russian 2223
    Spanish 2223

With the permission of the department involved, the student may take the final examination without enrolling in the course in which the student must earn a grade of B or better on the exam. It may be necessary, of course, for the student to take the course or the whole sequence. These courses do not count towards fulfillment of the total hour requirements for graduate degrees.

Option 3

The student may demonstrate proficiency by passing a test administered by qualified members of the Modern Languages or Classics Department. The test will involve translation with a dictionary of a passage or passages chosen by the faculty member administering the test. For modern languages the passage(s) will be selected from a book written in that language proposed by the student taking the test; this book may deal with a subject matter consonant with the student's own critical interests, but MUST NOT BE TRANSLATED INTO ENGLISH. Students may prepare for this test through self-study or by taking the reading courses in these languages available in the appropriate department. A fee of $15.00 is charged for this testing service. For more information, please contact Mr. Brandon Smith (modlang@ou.edu), 325-6181.

Option 4

A student with a baccalaureate degree (or its equivalent) from a recognized foreign institution in which instruction is given in a language normally accepted by this department, and students with a B.A. in that language, or who hold an M.A. or Ph.D. degree in it from an American university, will automatically qualify as satisfying the M.A. foreign language requirement in that language.
