Department of English Scholarships and Awards

Several departmental merit awards and scholarships are available to students, from freshmen to seniors. Awards are made by faculty nomination and committee so you do not need to apply for these awards.

  • The Lydia Dorthea Haag Award, named for a former instructor in English, is awarded annually to two men and two women students in their first year of English Studies. The award amount is $1,000 per student and is given for outstanding performance in English classes at OU.
  • The Dr. Betty Evans Scholarship in English was established in honor of Dr. Evans, a vital member of the department for many years. Her scholarship is awarded to one to four students each year who produce superior creative writing and critical essays. The award amount is $100 per student.
  • Several Goldia D. Cooksey Memorial Awards ($150 each) are given to students showing writing promise through critical essays and creative writing.
  • The Jewel Wurtzbaugh Memorial Fund, established in memory of an outstanding educator, awards $500 each year to one student for a superior essay written in the area of Women's Studies in an English Course.
  • The James C. Benson Prize in English is presented to one student each year for outstanding creative or critical writing by an undergraduate English major. The award amount is $250.
  • All English majors are eligible for the Margaret Castelez Scholarship, which is presented to one student each year. The amount of the scholarship is $100.
  • Junior and senior English majors with at least one year of residence and at least a 3.5 GPA are eligible for the Joe Sidney Nicholson Memorial Scholarship. The award amount is $100.
