Saxon Chair in Ancient History
Ancient History

Professor Bradford is the John Saxon Chair in Ancient History whose recent publications include Flying the Black Flag: A Brief History of Piracy and a book on the history of warfare in ancient Greece, Rome, the Near East, India, and China titled With Arrow, Sword, and Spear: A History of Warfare in the Ancient World. He is now at work on a book-length study tentatively titled The Kings of Sparta as well as a prosopography of ancient Sparta. He is an award-winning teacher who offers a wide variety of classes on the ancient world. He teaches a popular course titled "The Ancient Art of War" and another course on the history of Sparta. All his courses require students to work extensively with primary sources, a key way to help students understand cultures so different from their own and how historians analyze such documents to construct arguments. Professor Bradford received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.
