Professor Cline is a historian of the later Roman Empire,
whose research examines the relationship between early
Christianity, early Judaism, and traditional Greco-Roman
religions. Dr. Cline’s work is interdisciplinary
in its approach, drawing on methods from fields such
as religious studies, classics, epigraphy, archaeology,
and art history. He is currently completing a book that
examines angel veneration in late antiquity, tentatively
entitled Angels in Later Roman Religion. The book utilizes
diverse sources such as Greek and Latin inscriptions,
inscribed lamps and amulets, biblical texts, patristic
sources, and Roman historians to gain a more complete
understanding of late antique religion. Dr. Cline has
recently taught courses on Greek and Roman history and
religion, the Early Church Fathers, Classical Mythology,
and intermediate Greek. He has worked as a supervisor
on archaeological projects in Greece and Israel. Dr.
Cline took his Ph.D. at the Pennsylvania State University.
