John Mooney's areas of research interest are the southern
United States, Reconstruction, African American history,
the Atlantic world, and the history of slavery. His
dissertation, entitled "Shadows of Dominion,"
argues that former slaveholders from Virginia pursued
postwar careers with the purpose of attempting to reconstitute
through postwar avenues of business, sectional politics,
and westward expansion the economic, political, social,
and racial power that they had wielded before the war.
As they did so, they built much of the New South, with
results that rarely mirrored their intents and frequently
contradicted them. His current research interests include
Reconstruction historiography, portrayals of the future
in the postwar South, and naming patterns among African
Americans after emancipation. He teaches courses on
United States history, a survey of African history,
and a history of West Africa. He received his Ph.D.
from the University of Virginia.
