William W. Savage, Jr.

United States History

Professor Savage has published eleven books on a wide variety of topics, ranging from The Cowboy Hero: His Image in American History and Culture to Singing Cowboys and All That Jazz: A Short History of Popular Music in Oklahoma to Comic Books and America, 1945-1954. He is also the author of many articles and book chapters and is a well-known scholar of popular culture in the American West. He is a regular contributor to Journal of Scholarly Publishing. At present, he is investigating the criminal career of Charles Arthur Floyd, better known as “Pretty Boy” Floyd, a study working at the intersection of Western history, popular culture, the manufacture of historic myths, and the social and cultural history of crime. He is also working on another project that focuses on the year 1933 as a critical point in the history of American culture. Professor Savage offers a wide range of courses, including recent offerings in military history, the history of the American West, and the history of Oklahoma. Listed in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World, he received his Ph.D. from the University of Oklahoma.
