Instructions for Applying for a Graduate Assistantship

The Department of History employs graduate assistants as graders, as research assistants, and in a few cases as teachers of independent sections in introductory courses. Academic excellence is the chief criterion in the selection of assistants.

A person must be admitted to the graduate program in History before they can be considered for an assistantship. Please refer to the department's information sheet on the graduate program for procedures about applying to the graduate program.

The personal data form is your official application for a graduate assistantship in the department. This will be available online in the near future.  In the meantime, copies can be obtained from the History Department. (Email  historygrad@ou.edu).

Complete the form and return it to:

Chairman for Graduate Studies
The University of Oklahoma, Department of History
455 West Lindsey Street, Room 403A
Norman, OK 73019-0535.

In addition you must have three letters of recommendation sent to the department. If you are applying for admission into the program, your letters of recommendation for admission can serve as letter of recommendation for a graduate assistantship. But please ask your reference to address their assessment of your abilities as a potential graduate assistant. If you are currently an enrolled graduate student at the University of Oklahoma you should have new letters written when you apply for an assistantship.

The department makes decisions concerning financial aid in the spring semester for the following academic year. In order to be considered for financial aid, you must submit your application by March 1. However, the department may make some decisions on financial aid before that date, and I therefore encourage you to complete your application to the department as early as possible in the spring semester. The Department of History makes every effort to inform you whether you have received an award on or before April 15, though budgetary considerations may make awards at that time conditional. If you have any questions about the progress of your application or any inquiry to make about the graduate program in history, please feel free to write Terry Rugeley, the Director of Graduate Studies.
