David Beyreis received his Bachelor’s Degree in History from Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Michigan in 2005. He finished his Master’s in History at Oklahoma State University in 2007. His thesis was entitled “Middle-Class Masculinity and the Klondike Gold Rush.” The project outlined differing ideals of manhood in the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century United States. At OU Dave’s studies focus on the American West in the mid-nineteenth century. He works with Dr. Albert Hurtado, and is interested in pursuing research in gender history during the age of Manifest Destiny, with a particular emphasis on California and the Pacific Rim. In addition to the American West, Dave also studies the United States to 1865 and Modern Latin America. He has presented papers, all dealing with gender roles in the American West, at a number of local and regional conferences, including the Oklahoma Phi Alpha Theta Conference, the Southwest Social Sciences Association Conference, and the Mid-American History Conference. In addition, he has authored several entries for a forthcoming encyclopedia of the American Revolution and Early Republic, edited by OU professor Paul Gilje.
