Patti Jo King

Patti Jo King, a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, received an extended B.S. in U.S. History in 2004 and her M.A. in History in 2006 from Northern Arizona University.  Her Master’s thesis, “Urbanization and Evolution of Modern American Indian Tribalism, Los Angeles and San Francisco, 1950-1970,” explores the nuts and bolts of the Federal Urban Indian Relocation Program.   As a third year doctoral student working with Prof. Warren Metcalf, she has continued her focus on twentieth century Native America.   Utilizing the rich primary sources available in the Cherokee Nation Papers held at OU’s Western History Collection, her dissertation; “The Forgotten Warriors: Keetoowah Revitalizers, Modernity, and the Struggle for Autonomy in the Cherokee Nation,” centers on Cherokee nation building in the post Civil War era.   Ms. King, an OU Foundation Fellow and a Francis Allen Newberry Fellow, has delivered many guest lectures on contemporary Native American issues.   A former journalist with over 35 years of experience, she is a frequent contributor to Indian Country Today News, Native American Times, and numerous mainstream media publications.
