Nicky Kay Michael received her B.A. in American Studies from Stanford University in 1994. Additionally, she fulfilled the requirements for a certificate in Race and Ethnicity (the equivalent of a minor in other universities). Her M.A. was from Oklahoma State University, 1999, where she worked with Dr. George Moses on her thesis titled, “Delaware Women in a Transitional Culture.” At OSU, Nicky fulfilled the language requirement by using her native language, Lenape, which she had been studying under the tutelage of James Rementer and the late Lucy Parks Blalock, the last native female speaker of the language. Currently, Nicky is ABD and working with Dr. Albert Hurtado on her Dissertation, “Sovereignty on Trial: Delaware and Cherokee Relations, 1866-2006.” OU has also granted approval for her studies of Lenape to fulfill the language requirement. She plans to publish and pursue a professional career in Native American History.
