Joe Otto started his graduate student career at the University of Oklahoma in 2012. Broadly, his primary area of study is American Environmental History. Specifically, he studies the relationship between people and water in the American Midwest, with a research focus on agricultural drainage and the artificial straightening of inland streams.Mr. Otto’s research is directed by History Department faculty member Dr. Sterling Evans. Prior to attending OU, Joe earned an MA in History from Appalachian State University (2012), an MA in Teaching from East Carolina University (2009), and a BS in History from Iowa State University (2007). Originally from Colfax, Iowa, Mr. Otto’s experience growing up in the Cornbelt influenced the research he currently pursues. Joe’s interests include canoeing, gardening, and college football.
