Ariana Quezada

Ariana Quezada received her B.A. in International and Area Studies (with a focus in Latin America) and Spanish from the University of Oklahoma in 2006 and is now at work on her M.A. in the field of Latin American history.  She is working with Prof. Terry Rugeley on a project tentatively titled “El Pueblo Refugiado: Guatemalan Refugees and the Emergence of Human Rights Discourse in Mexico,” that makes use of the microfilm collection at OU as well as the Archivo General de la Nación in Mexico City.  The thesis will pay particular attention to Guatemalan refugees who settled in Campeche, Quintana Roo and Chiapas and the effects of Neoliberal reforms in Mexico.  She has already presented her work at the annual Phi Alpha Theta Conference and will be presenting a paper in March, 2009 at the Rocky Mountain Council for Latin America Studies (RMCLAS) Conference in Santa Fe.  Once her M.A. is completed, she hopes to build on this project as she pursues her Ph.D. in Latin American history.
