Sarah Woods

Sarah Woods received her Bachelors in History from Northeastern State University in 2005 and is now at work on her Masters in the field of Pre-1865 American history.  She is working with Professor Cathy Kelly on a project tentatively titled “Shouting, Praying, and Exhorting Women: The Importance of Evangelical Camp Meetings to the Expansion of Women’s Informal Influence on the Kentucky Frontier, 1792-1833,” that makes use of the inter-library loan and online research sources available through the OU Library as well as its extensive microfiche and catalogue collections.  The thesis will to add to the growing scholarship in women’s history by showing that, through involvement with camp meetings, women played a significant role in the rise and spread of Evangelical Christianity on the early American frontier.  From 2005 to 2007, Sarah presented work at the annual Phi Alpha Theta Conferences on a range of topics, including the history of an Oklahoma Mission, the experience of a World War II army officer from Oklahoma, and an analysis of Spiritualism in Antebellum America.  Once her Masters Degree is completed, she hopes to gain a position as a community college instructor as well as a role in public history.
