I am an Associate Professor of Human Relations and a social worker. I earned an associates degree in sociology from Rose State College (then Oscar Rose Junior College ) in Midwest City in May 1978. I transferred to OU and earned a B.A. in social work in May 1980, with a minor in sociology. I worked with the Cuban refugee program in Ft. Chaffee , Arkansas , the summer of 1980 and then entered Graduate School that Fall. In May 1981, I graduated from OU with a Master of Social Work degree specializing in administration and planning. I entered the University of Texas at Austin 's doctoral program in social work in August 1981. I completed a Ph.D. in August 1984 with a specialization in child development and family relations. I served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan 's School of Social Work , the largest social work masters program in the U.S.

In 1987, I assumed the position of Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Work, with a joint appointment as Director of Prevention Research at the national headquarters of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America. In June 1992, I resigned my teaching position to become the operational director of Congreso de Latinos Unidos, the largest private nonprofit social service agency serving Latinos in the tri-state area of Pennsylvania , Delaware , and New Jersey . I moved on to become the Regional Director of the Philadelphia Office for Lutheran Children and Family Service, a private, nonprofit social service agency.

December 1996, I relocated to Oklahoma to become a Programs Administrator with the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (ODHS), where I designed an innovative statewide family prevention and intervention program called Comprehensive Home-Based Services (CHBS) under Oklahoma Children's Services (OCS). This effort has significantly changed the delivery of services to at-risk families and children and has allowed for extensive online documentation of service delivery by private contractors that is directly accessible by ODHS workers and facilitates in the regular monitoring, evaluation, and continuous quality improvement of the services provided.

In August 2000, I assumed the position of Associate Professor at the OU Department of Human Relations. I teach three graduate level courses (Current Problems in Human Relations; Family Assessment and Intervention; and Program Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) and one undergraduate course (Applied Research in Human Relations).

My research has included women who live apart from their children (non-custodial mothers), child sexual abuse prevention, culturally competent services to Latinos, intimate partner violence, and organizational development and program implementation.

Currently I am working on data from a national study of women who voluntarily or involuntarily live apart from their children.
