Overview
This unit focuses on the concept of diversity and racial and ethnic identity in the workplace.
Unit Learning Objectives
Upon completing this unit, students will be able to
· define culture;
· list and explain some of the problems in the study of culture;
· discuss cultural similarities and differences in body language, and distinguish between high-context and low-context cultures;
· distinguish between monochronic and polychronic cultures, and describe the influences on how time is organized in a particular culture;
· compare and contrast individual-centered and collectivist, or group-centered, cultures;
· list and explain various sources of social identity;
· describe problems and potential solutions related to balancing ones ethnic identity in culturally diverse societies;
· define ethnocentrism and explain its consequences;
· describe ways in which stereotypes are useful and three ways they distort reality;
· define prejudice and the psychological, social, and financial functions that cause it to persist;
· describe the debates that surround the definitions of racism, sexism, and other prejudices;
· and discuss the approaches that have been taken to try to reduce prejudice and conflict between groups, and describe their outcomes.
