Financial support is a crucial
factor in the timely completion of an advanced degree. The department seeks
to support the maximum number of eligible students each year.
Academic-year stipends
for half-time 10-month assistantships of $14,500.00
are awarded on a competitive basis to entering and continuing students
(doctoral candidates receive $16,150.00).
In conjunction with the department's responsibility for overseeing
the History of Science Society's Current Bibliography 2
graduate research assistantships may be appointed
to 12-month half-time positions at an annual stipend of $17,730.00. |
To be considered for financial support,

Half-time Graduate assistants typically
serve as teaching or research assistants; well-qualified applicants
will be considered for fellowships that carry no responsibilities
for research or for instructional assistance. The award
amount is $14,500.00 (for doctoral candidates, $16,150.00) |
| tuition waiver
awards |
Half-time Graduate assistants receive a complete
waiver of all non-resident tuition (out of state and resident
tuition will be charged for all non-residents of Oklahoma). At
the average course load (9 hrs. per semester plus 4 summer hours)
this constitutes a waiver of $7,486.60 per year. In addition,
the Graduate College currently provides graduate assistants with
a waiver of 7 hrs. per semester resident tuition ($1,855.00 per
year). |

The dept. considers participation in scholarly meetings
a significant part of the professionalization of graduate students.
In conjunction with the Graduate College and the University of
Oklahoma Graduate Student Association, the department has a consistent
record of success in providing travel funds to students presenting
papers. |

note to prospective applicants
from abroad re
living expenses |
Potential applicants to the graduate program in the Department of the History of Science
should be aware of the considerable cost of graduate study in American universities.
It should not be assumed that if an applicant is awarded an academic year (9-month)
assistantship, the stipend and benefits will necessarily suffice to cover all expenses for
one full year of graduate study. This is particularly important to note if the applicant
has one or more dependents.
For 2006-2007, University of Oklahoma authorities estimate
conservatively that the yearly expenses of living and studying
at the University of Oklahoma amount to $25,839 for a graduate
student. This includes the estimated cost of tuition and fees.
The university also estimates that, for a student accompanied
by a spouse, the total yearly expenses increase by $3,100, therefore
totaling $28,939. The amount should be further increased by $1,500
for each dependent child. We regard these as quite conservative
estimates, and depending on the requirements of each student (and
their dependents, as the case may be) the resources needed could
very well be higher than these amounts.
For the academic year 2006-2007, a half-time graduate
assistantship in History of Science carries a stipend of $14,500.00.
Appointment to a graduate assistantship normally includes a waiver
of a major part of tuition costs, estimated at about $9,341.60.
Therefore an assistantship in the History of Science contributes
about $23,841.60 toward the total annual costs.
Thus the resources of a graduate assistantship may be
nearly adequate to finance one year of graduate study for a single
student, but not for a student with a spouse. Applicants who hope
to be awarded an assistantship by the University should realize
that they may need to rely on additional resources, either from
their own funds or from another source, to finance their graduate
studies.
The university also requires international applicants
to submit a confidential financial statement along with the application.

Potential applicants should note that graduate assistantships are awarded on a competitive
basis to entering and continuing students. Although we attempt to provide continued funding
for graduate students in the program, our resources are not sufficient to guarantee
every student support for the duration of their program. We believe it is appropriate for
all prospective applicants to be alerted to the keenly competitive allocation of graduate
assistantships; applications which are not of the strongest caliber are unlikely to yield
an assistantship offer. |
