Professional Development / Placement
The department recognizes that training for graduate students extends beyond the classroom, and to that end we have devised several programs that encourage sustained professional development. The department organizes a regular series of colloquia that includes presentations by graduate students as well as visiting scholars. Beginning in the first year, we encourage attendance at and participation in scholarly meetings, and to help defray associated costs, the department and the university have several travel funding programs to which graduate students may apply. The program’s student organization, The History of Science Association, coordinates activities that support professional development, including student-led reading groups and sponsorship of conferences, and produces Hydra, the Online Graduate Journal for the History of Science. We encourage thesis and dissertation students to seek both internal and external funding for research. Each spring, the department organizes a day-long workshop on professional development topics, including preparation of applications for positions and proposals for research grants and fellowships.
The department also encourages timely completion of degree programs and helps students prepare strong applications for post-graduate positions. The University of Oklahoma has partnered with Interfolio, the premiere clearinghouse for references on the Internet. Interfolio is a tool for graduate students or PhDs. A file can include letters of evaluation, curriculum vitae, committee letters, certifications, and more. These documents are then used to support applications to academic positions, professional schools or jobs.
Virtually all full-time MA thesis students complete the program within two years of matriculation. The 11 most recent PhD recipients have completed their degrees in an average of 8.1 years from the time of matriculation, and the 6 who have entered the program since 2001 have taken an average of 6.9 years to complete their degrees.
