Application Instructions

Applicants should submit completed forms and official transcripts to the Office of Admissions and Records. (Please note: Even when your intention is to work toward the doctoral degree, indicate on the application form that you are applying initially for admission to the Master's program -- code 2216 M; exceptions may be made for applicants who have already earned a Master's degree in the field. See the department's Graduate Program Information Book for more details.  Applicants to the Dual Degree Program in History of Science and Library and Information Studies should use code 4952M.

Application Procedures

General application materials required of all prospective graduate students are processed by the Graduate College and the Office of Admissions and Records.  However, the Department of the History of Science asks applicants to submit additional materials directly to the department for consideration.

The following should be sent to the Department:

·  Statement of purpose

·  Three confidential letters of reference (each accompanied by Recommendation Form)

·  Official Graduate Record Examination scores

·  Writing sample

The following should be sent to the Office of Admissions and Records:

·  Application for Admission Form

·  Official transcripts for all undergraduate course work

·  $40 application fee ($90 for international student applicants)

·  Confidential Financial Statement (international applicants only)

·  Official TOEFL scores (international applicants only)

Please note that application materials to both the Department and the Office of Admissions and Records should be received by January 15 in order to be considered during our annual review process for admission and financial aid for the following Academic Year. Applications received after that time will be considered on an ad hoc basis.
