 is
one of a small number of universities with a department devoted
to studying the history of science and its cultural influences.
We offer a diverse array of courses,
and invite students from any major to join us as we explore the
development of scientific ideas within their social contexts, from
antiquity to the modern era. We also invite you to learn more
about our minor in the history of science,
which allows students to choose a sequence of courses that will
give them a rich understanding of scientific life and a deeper awareness
of the interrelationships between science & society.
Our graduate program is designed
to provide students with a comprehensive knowledge of scientific
inquiry as they also acquire the skills and background necessary
for conducting specialized research. The history
of science collections, with over 91,000 volumes, is a world-class
resource on which every student can draw. The research expertise
of the faculty is wide-ranging,
and marked by a commitment to interdisciplinarity. Areas of
particular strength in our program include:
medieval and early modern science
natural history
and the field sciences
modern social
and biological science
history of science in america
history of technology
The department offers programs of study leading to the Master's
degree in History of Science; the dual Master's degree in Library
and Information Studies and History of Science; and the Doctorate
in History of Science. If you have any questions, please feel free
to contact Professor Steven J. Livesey,
our Graduate Admissions Coordinator.
